CGT and tax changes for law firms
"the 1 July 2027 reset"

Tuesday 1 September, 12pm–1pm (AEST)

From 1 July 2027, every SME law firm principal in Australia has a legislated value attached to their business. It’s the number the ATO will use in every capital gains tax calculation on that asset for as long as you own it, whether you sell in two years or twenty. Most principals don’t yet know what that number is, and most have never had their firm’s goodwill formally valued.

This live session unpacks exactly what changed in the law, why it matters even if you have no plans to sell, and why leaving the number to the ATO’s default formula can cost improving firms hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra tax. We’ll also cover the two things every principal can still do before 30 June 2027 to move that number in their favour.

Join Gulshan Gupta and Matt Schlyder as they walk through the changes, the numbers, and a clear plan of action for your firm, with time at the end for your questions.

What you will learn

In this webinar, we will cover:

  • What actually changed in the law on 26 June 2026, and what’s still just proposed.
  • How the new 1 July 2027 transition date creates a permanent, legislated value for your firm’s goodwill.
  • Why the ATO’s default valuation formula gets it wrong for most improving firms, and what that costs on a real sale.
  • How law firm goodwill is actually calculated, in plain terms.
  • The two numbers that move your firm’s value, average rate and revenue lock-up, and how they compound.
  • A worked example showing how modest operational change moved one firm’s goodwill from $360,000 to $1.65 million.
  • A clear, practical plan for what to do before 30 June 2027.
