We saw equity markets have an excellent 12 months ending December 2013. While fixed interest and bonds delivered returns below their long term average.
For the year ending 31 December 2013 equities have had a strong one year performance. The ASX300 returned 19.68%, while the MSCI World index (excluding Australia) returned 48.50% for the calendar year ending 31 December 2013.
Equities in the United States stocks did incredibly well in 2013. When you include dividends, the Standard & Poor’s 500 rose 31.9 percent. That’s the best one year return since 1997.
The rate of returns achieved for 2013 have been very impressive for equities across the board, however it is hard for these exceptional results to last year in year out. Hence, the importance of having a well diversified portfolio.
